Primetime Anytime

February 29th, 2012

DISH Network’s new Hopper whole-home DVR system wowed the crowds at the 2012 International CES, the world’s largest consumer technology trade show. Along with the 2TB hard drive and the innovative “Joey” client receivers, which allow you to bring the TV and DVR in up to four rooms of your house, the new PrimeTime Anytime feature was very impressive.

The Hopper’s exclusive PrimeTime Anytime feature gives you instant OnDemand access to three hours per night of HD primetime programming on ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC. These shows will be available for up to 8 days from the initial due date. No more having to remember to set your DVR or having to choose between your favorite shows. Best of all you still have two tuners to use to record or watch other shows during primetime, and it doesn’t take up any of your personal DVR space, so you still have enough room for over 250 hours of HD programming available.

The opportunity to watch all of the best primetime shows OnDemand and still watch and record other programming, all while conserving space on the 2TB hard drive? Sounds like the perfect solution for the TV lover in all of us!

84th Annual Academy Awards

February 27th, 2012

The 84th Annual Academy Awards has come and gone, leaving the internet in a titter over dresses and statuettes in its wake.

“The Artist”, a French silent film starring Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo, was the darling of the evening with 5 Academy Award wins, including Best Picture – the first silent film to receive the honor since the original Oscar ceremony 83 years ago – and Best Actor for Dujardin. Dujardin became the first Frenchman to win an acting Oscar. “Oh, thank you. Oui. I love your country!” said Dujardin.

“Hugo”, set in 1930s Paris and tells the tale of an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station and is surrounded by the mystery of his father and an automaton, also won 5 awards and led the field with 11 nominations.

Meryl Streep swept up the golden statue for Best Actress in “The Iron Lady”, a biopic on former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Margaret Thatcher. It is Streep’s first Oscar win, despite 17 nominations, since she won 23 year ago for Sophie’s Choice. Streep humorously remarked when accepting her award, “When they called my name, I had this feeling I could hear half of America go, ‘Oh, no, why her again?’ But whatever.” Streep is only the fifth performer to receive three Oscars. Jack Nicholson, Ingrid Bergman and Walter Brennan all earned three, while Katharine Hepburn won four.

Octavia Spencer picked up her first Oscar win for her role as Minny Jackson in “The Help”. Her genuine and heartwarming acceptance speech brought her a standing ovation. Christopher Plummer, the 82-year-old was nominated for his role as an elderly widower who comes out as gay in “Beginners”, was witty with his acceptance speech and the fact that he is the oldest acting winner – edging out Jessica Tandy, who won as best actress for “Driving Miss Daisy” when she was 80 – by remarking to his gold Oscar statuette, “You’re only two years older than me, darling.”

Super Bowl XLVI

February 6th, 2012

Did you catch the game last night?

Last night wasn’t just any Sunday night football game, it was the 46th annual NFL Super Bowl. The AFC’s New England Patriots went head to head against the NFC’s New York Giants.

With a projected viewership of 117 million for the event televised by NBC, nearly half the country tuned in to watch Super Bowl XLVI, 6 million more than the 2011 Super Bowl. According to Twitter there were nearly 10,000 tweets every second for the last three minutes of the Super Bowl, and Bluefin Labs has tracked 12.2 million comments about the Super Bowl in total across Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites. Bluefin advises that the Super Bowl commercials alone generated 985,000 social media comments, topping the entire telecast of the 2011 Academy Awards by nearly 20,000.

Super Bowl XLVI is the new biggest social media-TV event ever, blowing past the previous record holder – the 2011 MTV VMAs that only garnered 3.1 million social media comments. Did you catch the action?
